Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals buying these medications must be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural support.
